When it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in the late 19th and early 20th century, Czernowitz was an attractive place, a center of culture and learning. It had a large Jewish community and was the birthplace of the poet and essayist Paul Celan . Aharon Appelfeld , Israeli author of many well-known novels about the Holocaust, was born there in 1932.
