My father and me, Chicago, April 1947

This was taken in front of our apartment building. My parents chose Chicago because my father was offered an opportunity to go into the wholesale diamond business there. Since consumer durable goods, such as automobiles, refrigerators, and the like were not available during the war, diamonds sold well, and for several years, his business thrived -- as you can probably tell from how well dressed we both are in this picture. A couple of years after the war, however, the diamond market crashed, and his career as a diamond dealer (and our period of relative prosperity) came to an abrupt end.
