My father returned to Vienna in January 1938 to attend to business and prepare for his marriage to my mother in April. According to my mother, they wrote each other every day. This photo is inscribed on the back in German, “To my dear Ina, from your Kuby [his nickname], Vienna, 27-1-1938.” They were planning to live in Vienna, but on March 12, 1938, the Anschluss took place and Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany. The Holocaust was in its early stages. My father was able to escape to Warsaw, although his bank accounts and other property were confiscated by the Nazis.
