Tower of Salvaged Street Signs at the District 6 Museum

South Africa

District 6 was a vibrant multi-racial neighborhood until the apartheid government decided to zone it as "whites only," proceeded to expel the 60,000+ residents, then systematically bulldozed the entire area. These street signs were supposed to have been dumped in the bay, but the person responsible instead hid them in his cellar and, after the end of apartheid, donated them to the newly-established District 6 Museum. Those street names. There is nothing African about them therefore nothing to be proud of. They are the legacy of British colonialism.

This is unbelievable. And so sad. This district HAS to be built again and by the blacks. What arrogance.
