We also met our friend David “Clarinet” Clark. David was working his way around the world by playing the clarinet and singing in hotels and bars along the way. When he was playing his clarinet at a restaurant in Brisbane, on the east coast of Australia, an immigration officer happened to come into the restaurant and ask David for his working papers. Naturally David didn't have any, so the officer informed him that he could not work in Australia playing his clarinet. So David packed up his gear and sailed up the barrier reef, across the top of Australia to Darwin where he immediately got a job playing at the Darwin Yacht Club. Would you believe that only one week later the very same immigration officer happened to be on vacation in Darwin and happened to come into the Darwin Yacht Club for dinner. When he saw David, he yelled, “David! I thought I told you, you can not work in Australia without a work permit. And he gave David 24 hours to leave the country.
