After a few days into the trip we happened to meet Roger and Sheila on Kuan Yin. Roger and I had built his self steering gear in Sydney for a total of $12 and that was the coast of hot dip galvanizing the steel rudder. Our Hassler wind vane was the most expensive piece of equipment on our boat and it cost us $1,300 before we had left home, Roger’s windvane worked every bit as well as ours as we kept an almost perfect identical course.
