That evening we went to their little thatch roofed house and they served us a dinner of cooked chicken and taro root. After dinner they asked me to join them in the kava ceremony. Kitty was saved because only the men participate. I turned to the guy next to me and said, “I am a Mormon; I am afraid I can’t drink the kava.” He replied, “I’m a Mormon too, we can drink it!!!” Thank God the girls no longer chew it up and spit it into a bowl. Now days they grind it up in a mortar and pestle and wash it through water then they drink it in a half coconut shell. After the ceremony, they lit a bunch of torches and singing and waving the torches they escorted us back to our dinghy on the beach. They continued singing as we rowed back to our boat.
