The year before we left, both Kitty and I had taken celestial navigation at the Hayden Planetarium and since there was no GPS or SatNav in those days, we had to rely on our sextant and our math to work out our positions by measuring the angle between the sun (or stars) and the horizon and marking the exact time of the measurement. Also before we left, I had bought a good Rolex watch because for every 4 seconds off of Greenwich meantime at the exact time of the measurement would put us a mile off on our fix. After working my fix, I would go back on deck, look around and say, “Sure enough we are right where my calculations put us….right it the middle of the ocean!”
