050723_131315_0297 Cook's Rainbow (Sat 23 Jul 05)

Lake Burley Griffin, Canberra, ACT

This is one of my earlier shots. At the time I was still keeping count of the shots taken with my 300D so... 297 is a pretty low number.

A rainbow cuts through the Captain Cook Water Jet monument. The National Library stands in the background, with Parliament House's 4-posted flagpole visible off to the right. My original comment was that I'd probably just fluked the shot, but a comment made by PBase member Andrew jogged my memory (and thank you kindly for it, Andrew); I remember now that my intention WAS to have the rainbow cutting from the stylised sculpture of the globe on the left into the lake. I didn't QUITE make it, but the result was still not too bad if I do say so myself.

The sphere on the left is the land based part of the monument, being a globe which shows Cook's 3 voyages of discovery.

It's the perpetual lament of learning photographers: "If only I knew then what I know now..."

Fluke or not I think it looks great, Alan! The water jetting upwards as it cuts through the sky came out particularly well. Good and level to my eye too. I also tend to favor the inclusion of that rock/monument(?) on the left side. Love how we can see the rainbow kiss the surface of the water on the right end of it.

Well done. You've managed to pull quite a bit out of the kit lens on this one. By the way......it's the color and breadth of the sky that drew me into this one first over all others in this gallery. The photo of the monument with what appears to be a nicely polarized sky was a close second. V
