210427_174610_0101 Ringside Seat to the Supermoon (Tue 27 Apr 21)

Thirroul Beach, Illawarra, NSW view map

From the Australian ABC network:
"If you look up later tonight, you'll see a beautiful full moon as it makes its closest approach to Earth this month - aka a supermoon.
In North America, the April full moon is known as a "pink" moon.
It's not actually pink in colour - according to folklore, it's named after the first pink flower of the season."

Nor is it quite as "super" as one may have liked. The moon is approaching its closest point to the Earth but is still many hours away from it; it will happen around 1:22am tomorrow morning my time. At that point it should appear at its largest in the sky. Or would, if rainclouds had not moved in an hour ago.

Down here in the Illawarra we seem to have a perpetual cloud band just off the coast near the horizon as well. That neatly obscures both sunrises and moonrises, as happened tonight. No large moon majestically rising out of the ocean for us, no sir! Still, while the moon wasn't pink it DID seem larger and redder than usual. (Though some of the red banding is due to the interaction of the off coast clouds with the reddish reflected light of the moon itself.)

I have several other shots that I'll put in the Illawarra gallery, but this one with the beachside seat is in honour of all of the people who went down to the beach to sit there and watch the moon rise.

Great composition with this perspective. Really like the lighting and that sky.

I like the depth with the bench and view into the distance. Spectacular light too. V

I really like the mood of this image - and the idea of people gathering at the beach to watch it rise.
Must check and see if it's visible here but I suspect it's too cloudy.
