The plan was to shoot some specific shops in the area as part of my unstructured plan to document the neighbourhood.
Sunrise was at 06:21. Since I hadn't done dawn patrol for a while, I had forgotten how long before sunrise civil twilight kicked in. (05:54 today, as it happened.) When I headed for the car, there was therefore light in the sky. I looked toward the ocean and saw...
Woah. Red. I'm going to need to get to that, now.
I therefore fired up the car, set the stereo to play the Formula 1 theme, picked a beach and headed for it at the maximum legal speed. More or less.
The light over the sea was impressive, but it seemed a little... featureless. I therefore decided to pull back between the public change blocks / Thirroul Beach Pavilion on the left, and the Surf Life Saving equipment building on the right.
I got a few shots of that, but still wanted more. There were a couple of people who walked past with their dogs, but they became blurs because of the shutter speed. Then a cyclist came past. He too became a blur... but a blur with a tail light.
Thus, pre-planning gave way to improvisation.
I stayed around until sunrise to see what that would offer. Nothing, as it turned out. By the time sunrise came a heavier bank of cloud had moved in over the horizon and there was nothing but grey light. Still, that was a ways off into the future when this shot was done.
