190909_164031_0587 Clive

King Charles Street, London view map

The statue requires only a single name on its plinth; "Clive". Those who are widely read may also remember him as "Clive of India", also known as Robert Clive, and 1st Baron Clive.

He is credited with being the principal driver of seizing control of extensive parts of South Asia including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma (as it was then called) and so on. This in turn led to the creation of the British Raj and to the massive enrichment of himself.

Just as importantly, he was integral in blocking French interests in India.

Were his actions or methods acceptable by today's standards? No. Even in his own time a lot of people criticised him. That, however, is not the point. The point is that he is a key figure in history which is why this bronze statue exists and has done since 1912. (Though it was moved to this location in 1916.) History can't be changed, and it shouldn't be expunged. And so for now at least Clive still stands at the entrance to King Charles Street.
