... as I was in the previous photo, here it is in more detail. No, this isn't what I call the greatest shot on earth but it's really difficult to frame a good shot when you're cruising by a subject on a bus.
I must confess that the stance of this particular soldier did not make a lot of sense to me; it almost looked as if the figure was being crucified and there is no earthly way that that could be correct. I later found out that there are 4 figures arrayed around the memorial representing different aspects of the artilleryman's experience. A captain is on the east, a shell carrier is on the south, a dead soldier is on the north (which caused no small amount of controversy when the memorial was unveiled in 1925), and on the west, this figure of a driver who is worn out by his task of pulling the artillery pieces around.
Unfortunately the light was pretty bad on this day and had not made its way all the way to the west. As a result none of the details of the face were captured; to do that I'd have to have gotten off the bus and gone in a lot closer.
