We had a day up our sleeves in Zurich, for which we had a range of options. As "Pretty Countryside" is what Switzerland does best, I decided that a day trip north to Schaffhausen near the German border on the expensive but marvellously clean, efficient and modern Swiss railway would be the way to go.
(The down side of improvised trips like this became apparent when we tried to catch the bus back from the falls to the station and it took us a while to find the stop. Google Maps seemed to have a migraine and was pointing us in a ridiculous number of different directions. However that was for later, and we did eventually find a bus stop. Also had I realised exactly how close to the German border - we were within 2km at one point - I might have been tempted to go for a wander down the road just so that we could say that we had been in Germany.)
The key sight to see in Schaffhausen is the Rhine falls, reputed to be the largest in Europe. Whether that is so or not you have to admit that this is a pretty substantial flow. And yes, that is a lookout on that rock in the middle of the falls. (With the Swiss flag on it, of course.) And yes, those are people out there.
How did they get there? You have to swim across the lower part of the river. It's OK though, there's a shop where you can hire swimsuits down there.
Just kidding. There are boats that can take you in on a rather hair raising ride. We hemmed and hawed about whether to take the boat ride. Looking back on it now... yeah, I wish I had. Thankfully the Olympus is weather sealed.
It would be so nice to be able to do a virtual run of your holidays before you actually do them so that you come back with fewer "coulda-woulda-shoulda"s.
