160114_053215_1140026 How On Earth Did I Miss This? (Thu 14 Jan)

George St, Sydney CBD

I've been walking from Town Hall to work recently, which is a 20 minute trudge. It's an alternative to a 20 minute ride on a bus that has rarely turned up within 10 minutes of its scheduled time since the timetable was updated for the George St closures that I mentioned in a previous PAD, and which follows a circuitous route that leaves you plenty of time to admire the undersides of the concrete overpasses which lead into the city. Or, alternatively, standing at Central for 20 minutes waiting for the next Light Rail service to bother to turn up, then jamming in with all of the other people who have been waiting as it slowly shuffles its way along the line, moving at an average rate that is sometimes barely better than walking speed.

One advantage of the walk is that I get to look around more.

And so it was that I noticed that Grill'd, the finest damn healthy 'burger chain on the planet, had opened up in the City. (Previously there had only been one at Darling Harbour.)

This data will be put to good use in due course.

But not today. In some parts of the world a couple of 25 degree C days constitutes a heatwave. (Heh-heh-heh-heh-heh!) In this part of the world we have real heatwaves. A mass of hot air had been sitting over NSW for the preceding 3 days. On Tuesday temperatures were in their 30's. On Wednesday they dropped back to mid to high 20's, but only briefly, for today we took the prize; over 40 in some parts of Sydney. (Thankfully it's much cooler in the morning when I walk, but it still gets a bit sweaty by the end.)

However mother nature is a true "mother" sometimes, and she likes to throw in a bit of balance. So late in the day we had a gusty, stormy southerly change which dropped the temperatures by 10 to 15 degrees within an hour. And, as a by-product, blew over some trees and (in our case) whipped off a tin roof and threw the whole lot onto the railway power lines, effectively obliterating all services south for several hours. (It had taken out two other lines as well so replacement buses and repair crews were all stretched thin.)

Net result? I got home some time after 22:00.

Thankfully I can sometimes work from home, and that's exactly what I did on Friday.

I didn't use a B&W layer on this one obviously; just a saturation layer which let me take the saturation down except for the Grill'd sign, which I masked out. So no, not quite the same technique as my one from earlier this week.

I'm sorry to hear the weather was so bad. Thankfully you can work from home.
I really like the results in this. The pop of color against the gray is very nice. Great lines and the composition nicely fills the frame. V

Love the technique. Sorry to hear about the troubles from the weather.

This is awesome. Love the lines in the façade, even more pronounced in mono. I live in a very hot, humid climate too. Our weather is 35+ from June through September. Gulf breeze gives us lots of sticky humidity and no cooling at night. :) Glad you are able to work from home. V

What a day you had.... I saw the temperature had climbed on the east coast and felt for you! Not good when you also have humidity...it must have felt like living in a sauna Alan!
