20150401_006638 The Soldier (Wed 01 Apr)

Martin Place Cenotaph, Sydney, NSW

The Sydney Cenotaph is located in Martin Place, just outside the former GPO (General Post Office) building. It's the focal point of most of the ANZAC and Remembrance Day ceremonies in the city.

The Cenotaph consists of a large rectangular piece of granite in the form of a tomb, with a bronze soldier standing at one end and a sailor at the other to guard it. (Having been finished in 1927, nobody (who was wearing the obligatory blinkers) considered air power to be particularly important, and in any case the Royal Australian Air Force had been formed only a few years earlier in 1923. Granted the Australian Flying Corps, its predecessor, was formed in 1912, but who's counting?)

In this case I've framed the sculpture of the soldier In one of the sandstone archways of the GPO.

The light is lovely. The framing is very well done. V
