20140822_8220008 I'll Bet Cook Wished It Was This Easy (Fri 22 Aug)

Barangaroo North Development, Darling Harbour, Sydney

I'm getting a toofer here; first, I get a shot of the Barangaroo North development as part of my series of documenting the progress of the project, and secondly we get to see the replica of Captain Cook's Endeavour sailing up Darling Harbour before hanging a right beyond the head land and heading into Sydney Harbour proper.

I was on a teambuilding exercise once where part of the exercise involved answering a series of questions. One of the questions was "in which year did Captain Cook sail into Sydney Harbour?"

Don't answer so fast. The answers from our group ranged between 1770 and 1788 (by which time Cook was actually dead) until two of us simultaneously pointed out that the correct answer was... he didn't. Cook sailed past the heads to Sydney Harbour because he was concerned that if he went in he'd have a lot of trouble getting out again. That's because in 1770 he was limited by wind and sail. As you can tell by the absence of sails in this shot though, the replica of his ship has a motor. I suspect that there were times when Cook himself wished that he could just find some alternative source of power for his ship. Of course, modern ships would have been beyond his imagining.
