20140725_7250035 Not Commonly Seen In These Parts (Fri 25 Jul)

Pyrmont, Sydney, NSW

The berths around Pyrmont no longer host the cargo ships from around the world that they once did. Instead they typically house yachts or other pleasure boats these days. Some of those are indeed from overseas. Even so, this is not a flag that will be often seen around this part of the world.

You know of course that during WW II Hitler did in fact invade Britain? What, he did not! I hear you cry. Yes he did. Just a little bit of it. A group of islands known as the Channel Islands which are in fact far closer to Normandy in France than to Britain itself. When France fell Britain decided that they weren't defensible (which is true) and demilitarised them to allow the Germans to occupy them without resistance. (Had they actually bothered to tell the Germans this the Germans may not have conducted some bombing raids that unnecessarily killed a number of island residents.) The most famous and largest of the Channel Islands is Jersey known as a tax haven if you have a lot of money, and for John Nettles playing Detective Sergeant Bergerac if you don't. (Indeed so indelibly was Bergerac imprinted on Nettles that in one episode of his later series Midsomer Murders (where he played a Detective Chief Inspector named Tom Barnaby), he announced himself to a suspect as "Detective Sergeant Barnaby". I'm not sure how that made it through post production.)

The second of the islands is Guernsey and this (the point, I finally get to it) is the civil ensign of that island. The yacht in question is named Sassafras and while I was initially quite chuffed to see a visitor from such a quaint part of the world the reality was a little different. Sassafras is registered in Guernsey but its home port is in fact the far more prosaic Newport Rhode Island.

The vital statistics of Sassafras are :
Superyacht Name: Sailing Yacht SASSAFRASS Ex: 371 Pamina - Built By: Royal Huisman - Built in: Vollenhove, Dutch - Launched in: 2000 - Refitted in: 2007 - Length Overall: 34.2 metres / 112.2 feet - Waterline Length: 25.15 (82.5 ft)
I love that teak deck. I just don't want to be standing on it is all.

other sizes: small medium large original auto
