20140207_2072334 The Rhino Countdown (Fri 07 Feb)

Harbourside, Darling Harbour, NSW

Some time around January (I think it was; it may have been earlier) a herd of rhinos started appearing around Sydney. Not actual living, breathing, foul tempered, charge at your Land Rover rhinos, but identical sculptures of rhinos. They were identical save for their paint jobs, which were applied by various artists.

The campaign was run by Taronga Park Zoo to raise both awareness and funds through an auction of the sculptures on 14 May. I'm posting this image in June so I've clearly run out of time to get some of the sculptures, though I believe that there are others that I took shots of in the ensuing weeks.

This particular one was designed by Maree Hand and created by Lara Johnson. It was sponsored by Dubbo city council, probably because Dubbo is the location of the Western Plains zoo, itself an extension of the Sydney-based Taronga zoo. The paintwork on this one serves a dual purpose, with the artist intending to state that it is "time to act" to save the rhinos, and the fact that a Rhino is claimed to be killed every 13 hours.
