The monorail was installed back in the 1980's to a lot of opposition at the time. It's never been a huge success as a people mover because it's expensive, it has limited carrying capacity, it's expensive, it covers only a small part of the city, it's expensive, even the parts of the city that it covers are not well covered, especially since the Chinatown station closed oh, and it's expensive.
However when there are enough seats available and you have the coin to ride it, it does offer a different perspective on Sydney. Also I recall that when there were computer shows on down at the conference centre in Darling Harbour, I took to riding the Monorail down so that I hadn't already worn out my feet by the time I got there.
It is the only direct and regular public transport link between the city and both the far side of Darling Harbour and the Pyrmont wasteland, if you discount the tortuous route and semi-regular service of the 443 bus.
The relatively new State government has, however, decided that it's time for the thing to be pulled down. Which would be fine and dandy, if there was something to replace it but there ain't. Take a good look, for in 12 months this may not be here. Even the green light and Harry Potter's spells won't save it.
