20120114_20753 Owwwwwl (Sat 14 Jan)

Taronga Park Zoo, Mosman, NSW

"OWWW! Dammit Steve[1], I thought we had an agreement about unscheduled prostate exams!"

This bird was part of the zoo's Free Flight Bird Show. My memory vaguely recalls that it was one of the owls, and the eye size would tend to suggest that as well. (I'm sure that no prostate exam was involved here, but you never know.) However I seem to also recall that a Tawny Frogmouth was involved in the show, a bird which is not an owl but is commonly mistaken for one and may be the one here.

I assumed that it would be easy to check on the zoo's web site but alas I assumed incorrectly. The site's page for this show does refer to some of the birds on show, but not this one. Though I may wish to have a photographic memory I don't, and while I may wish to be omniscient I'm not. I haven't studied ornithology and therefore lacked a framework on which to hang everything that I heard about birds that day, and there was too much to absorb to for me to be able to recall each and every thing I heard and saw on the day. It's not a bad web site overall, but could do with adding a little extra summary information on the various talks and shows.

That is a great shot. Caption matches the expressions perfectly.
