The current Federal opposition leader is named Tony Abbott. His entire political platform seems to be based on opposing. Not presenting ideas or policies. Not articulating dreams and hopes for the nation. No, simply opposing, tearing down, and reaching yet another nadir in playing the art of "gotcha". He appears to have no agenda other than to elevate himself to the Prime Ministership by saying "no" to everything that the government (itself somewhat limited in any vision beyond staying in power) tries to do.
Oddly, quite a few people have picked up on this vibe. On the very day that I'm posting this picture one political columnist in the Sydney Morning Herald wrote
"...the Coalition has a commanding share of the vote and would win in a landslide if an election were held today. But Abbott personally is a very unpopular leader, in the same dismal league as Gillard. His approval rating in the Herald-Nielsen poll is minus 13. It should be of only the coldest of comforts that Gillard rates minus 18. In Newspoll the two are on an identical minus 21."
Two of the people who seem to have picked up on it are Sydney-based sculptor Bjorn Godwin, and Aarhus (Denmark)-based Jette Gejl who created this mixed media work in response.
The title seems a tad optimistic, though. Just when you think that the politics can't scrape any lower levels... someone comes along to peel yet another layer off. This isn't helped by the wider public, with a concentration span now reduced to mere seconds thanks to iEverything, not taking the time to think through issues which means that they're reduced to soundbites and photo ops.
