I'm hugely late in posting my PADs because of a trip to Melbourne last weekend, followed up by a bitchin' dose of 'flu that I contracted after the second day down there. (And which I still have the tail end of at the time of writing.) However I thought I'd post this one at least.
On the first day I was solo for most of the time; that wasn't a particularly great day since the rental car company hadn't held aside my preferred car for me (though I got a quite decent, but much larger and less manoeuvrable than I'd prefer, replacement), nor did they have a GPS unit. Consequently the first day involved quite a bit of wasted and unscheduled wandering. Still, I got there in the end.
Before I had to drive out to the airport to pick up my significant other that evening, I went for a wander around the area near the hotel. There's a pedestrian bridge which runs from the MCG across to the Rod Laver Arena, passing over the rail lines which run between Jolimont and Flinders Street stations. I didn't have the tripod with me but was able to rest the 40D on the railing to take a few shots like this one, of which this is probably my favourite. The relatively long exposure time did no favours for the sharpness of the neon lights on the buildings, but on the other hand if I didn't have it I'd have lost a lot of the "starbursts" in the lights running along the tramline on the left, as well as the motion blur of the passing trains. It's probably the kind of shot that I'd like to revisit with a tripod and a stack of exposures to create an HDR composite.
