110324_171624_324349 Subediting Is A Dying Art (Thu 24 Mar)

York St, Sydney CBD

Or perhaps it's just the non-Twitter, non-SMS version of English that is. Or, perhaps, advertising copywriters figure that punters can't read anyway (or have lost the capacity to concentrate for more than 1.5 seconds), and eh, who'll notice as long as Doofus has the just the right amount of carefully manicured 3 day growth and Debbie has the Angelina lips-thing happening.

"There's a new look back in town", proclaims the poster.

Think about that for a moment.

If it's a "new look", how can it be "back"? And if it's "back", implying that we've seen it before, how can it be new?

It's a look that's back; from those glasses, the 1950's "George McFly Before-He-Punched-Out-Biff-At-The-Dance-Look". (Watch Back To The Future if the reference is lost on you.)

And indeed it's a look that you can pull off as long as you're (a) a model and (b) air brushed. On anyone else, I think they'd be better served by one of the "old looks" that are "still in town".
