110209_122134_2094014 Something Old, Something New (Wed 09 Feb)

Harris St, Pyrmont

This wasn't my first choice for today's shot, but that one vanished along with the sunshine of the early morning when the rainless cloud cover moved in. Nor was it my second choice, which would have required a lens with substantially longer reach; most likely the 28-135 on the 300D rather than even the Olympus' 14-42.

However all I had with me at the time was the Olympus and its 17mm prime f/2.8 "pancake", so that's what I went with. I still do want to get a few more outdoor shots with the pancake (since there were none in the gallery prior to today), but preferably in better light.

This shot, while neither hugely artistic nor memorable, does summarise the history of the last hundred years of Pyrmont in a single image. On the right is (the façade of) a building which is a remnant of the suburb's industrial age. It was most likely either a warehouse or a workshop back in the early days of last century.

To the left, we see a modern building, home to one of the telecommunications / media companies which now call the suburb home. Not all of them have prospered. Nokia, once the gorilla in the mobile 'phone field, is still a substantial player but its market share has been trending downward for a while now. It's possible that others, like me, experienced the company's appalling 3310 product. That is, the one with the keypad which would dial the 000 emergency number if it was sitting in your pocket, even if the keypad was supposedly locked at the time. And the back cover which took a jack hammer to get off every time you needed to reset the unit by removing the battery, which was often. It's possible that those people, like me, will next buy a Nokia product when we're having a warming eggnog in the chalet after a full day's snow skiing on the outskirts of Hell.

But hey, nice views from their building...

Good contrast and I know which one I prefer.
