100724_064926_8970 The Quarrymans Hotel (Sat 24 Jul 10)

214-216 Harris Street, Pyrmont, NSW

As I've mentioned elsewhere in this gallery, Pyrmont has seen many changes over the years. The stone quarries which once supplied building materials to Sydney have long since gone, but the hotel which clearly from the name once served the workers in those quarries remains.

These days you'll find trivia nights with The Lady In Red and other urban professional entertainments that would have made the quarry workers throw their schooner glasses at something. (After they'd emptied the contents, naturally.)

Edit September 2023: I should have done some digging about The Quarryman's past in the 2010 description. According to various local history groups, it was established in 1880 as O'Donnell's Hotel. In 1913 it was taken over by a new licencee (possibly one Albert Magull) and extended up by 1 floor.

There was a further refurbishment in 2012, 2 years after this shot was taken. The pub now describes itself thus: "Pub grub & 20+ craft beers on tap offered in a relaxed watering hole with outdoor seating", which would probably have some of the pre-1913 patrons spinning in their graves but which suits the times and demography as it now is.

Whether The Lady In Red is still doing trivia? I can't say, but I have my doubts. However apparently Trivia is still "a thing" there since there was a post about a Tuesday Trivia night on their Facebook page as recently as 12 September this year. Oh, and live music is still a regular thing as well.

The building to the left was, at the time, the Azzurri restaurant. You probably can't see the decor in the reduced size shot, but I can; Formica chairs and tables. Mmm, up market! By November 2013 it was boarded up and being remodelled.

By the same date the building at the far left, "For Lease" in this shot, had become an Anytime Fitness 24 hour gym.

By July 2016 the boarded up building had become a Dominos Pizza (and you thought that Formica chairs couldn't go any further down market), and both properties have remained the same since as far as I am aware.
