This is not your father's village flower merchant.

Some of the inner city suburbs like to think of themselves as "villages" even though they're integrated into the core of the largest city in the country. Thus, we have the "village" flower merchant, even though this is not a "village" in a sense that your average Midsomer Murders viewer would recognise.

At a guess, this row of terraces was probably more desirable back in the day than the kinds that we saw in Paternoster Row elsewhere in this gallery. The brickwork is more ornate, the windows larger, and the attic provides extra sleeping and living space.

I like the way that the sandstone reflects the light in the early hours of the morning.

Edit September 2023: Looking at some of these old shots is frequently bitter-sweet. There is the sweetness of these places once having been there, and the bitterness of the knowledge that the places are no more.

According to Google Street View, the Village Flower Shop was still there in November 2014 but by August 2015 the building had a "For Lease" sign in it. It's possible that they continued on for a while without a shop front since their Facebook page shows only an address of "Pyrmont" (with no street address) and had postings up until 22 June 2016. After that... nothing, dead silence.
