100425_193628_7781 The Night Sky And The Frangipani Tree (Sun 25 Apr 10)

At Home, Sydney, NSW, Australia

My original intention was to shoot the frangipani tree as illuminated by the security spotlight. However when I noticed that the moon was out, I changed plans slightly. I'm still not sure about this one. I didn't incorporate the moon directly because when it's high in the sky (and the sky is in darkness) it usually just looks like a Disprin that's undergoing nuclear fission. Trying an HDR didn't do me any good this time, not that it mattered since I think (but am not sure) that I prefer this one where the moon is behind the clouds anyway and we see only its light.

The length of the exposure meant that there's some motion blur on the clouds which... eeeh, I'm not sure whether I care for it or not but part of the point of this exercise is to step outside of my comfort zone occasionally.

Sitting in the "V" between the building and the frangipani is another tree which is lit solely by the moonlight.

Edit 26 April 2024: At the time I shot this I probably assumed that I would always remember where this was shot from. However as I was updating the watermark I thought "hang on, how the hell am I seeing a wall over there on the left and a roof on the right?" The answer is that this was shot from the passageway leading from the street to the main entrance of the side of my (then) building on the right. The building on the left is what was then my next door neighbour's place. I once knew that place like the proverbial back of my hand and would never have had to think about that. A decade and a half changes things. Things that were once thought to be in your mind forever, drift out into irrelevance.

Also, there's something that I hadn't noticed for 14 years (almost to the day); the red dot roughly in the centre of the shot. A bit of dust on the sensor or the lens? No. It appears to be a navigation light on an aircraft. A shorter exposure may have missed it... as did I for over a decade.
