Darling Harbour, Sydney, NSW

The P&O cruise ship Pacific Dawn has been a regular visitor to Sydney's Darling Harbour Passenger Terminal. Seldom staying more than a few hours, she makes for a pretty impressive sight as she gets under power and works her way back out into the main harbour. However this may be one of her last times here. According to the P&O web site, she'll be based out of Brisbane from December of 2009 to be replaced by the new Pacific Jewel.

Here she's receiving fuel from Shell’s local mini-tanker, the barge Amorena which operates out of Shell's Gore Bay terminal in Greenwich.

Edit September 2023: When you're writing photo descriptions you never think of how they're going to age, but age they do. In 2019 P&O Australia announced that Pacific Dawn and her sister ship Pacific Aria were to be retired, a process that was brought forward by the pandemic of 2020. For about a year after being sold off the ship was anchored off the Gulf of Panama as a "floating community" named the Satoshi, during which time she gradually devolved into being a rust bucket. In May 2021 she was again sold to a new British cruise line called Ambassador Cruise Line, under whose flag she is sailing as the MS Ambience.

Amorena, which was built in 1975 and so is no spring chicken in maritime terms, worked for Shell for another couple of years from this shot. In 2011 she was sold to a company named Hydro-Tow Gladstone Australia, keeping her name in the process. (I have no idea what the source of that name is, though it is apparently a Portuguese verb meaning to tan or to darken. Which indeed I suppose would happen if the oil were to leak on the ship that it's refuelling, but I don't think that's the source of the name.) In any case, most maritime information pages show her as being "laid up" since 2016.

As I said... photos age.

She's like a floating hotel. Excellent detail in this!
