Ah, memories. The Savoy / Vibe was the hotel I stayed at during my first visit to Melbourne in 2005.
It's a very neat and refurbished hotel, but the atmosphere is a little... retro, for my taste. Apparently it was once a favourite of visitors like Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong.
The world has moved on.
The atmosphere at the Savoy / Vibe, particularly in the restaurant... not so much.
Speaking now to you from the year 2022... Apparently the owners liked the vibe, and wanted to make it even more retro, taking it back to the Art Deco vibe of the 20's and 30's. In 2018, according to a couple of sources, there was a refurbishment done:
"The Vibe Savoy Hotel Melbourne is currently undergoing a major refurbishment ahead of a rebrand; it’ll officially become The Savoy Hotel on Little Collins in October this year.
...
The refurb takes inspiration from the Art Deco period of the 1920s and ’30s, retaining the bones of the building, but overhauling the interiors."
Done well, an art deco can be excellent; the Park Hyatt in Canberra being a great example. It has been a while since I've been to Melbourne so next time... who knows?
