081213_142837_2817 Meet Rhapsody Of The Sea's Stern

Circular Quay, Sydney

The 915' (279m) long, 78,878 ton Rhapsody Of The Seas (Vision class, operated by Royal Caribbean International line) is at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay. One of her key features is the rock climbing wall which can be seen behind the funnel.

Falling off it when she's at her top speed of 22 knots (41 km/h) is not recommended unless you're a REALLY fast swimmer.

Rhapsody was built in 1997 making her a mere 11 years old at the time I took this shot, and 26 when I was updating these comments. She can carry between 2000 an 2431 passengers with 770 crew in 1,013 cabins over 12 decks.

Her last refurbishment was in 2016 which may or may not have had something to do with this incident:
"On April 25, 2016, the ship was in the Mediterranean Sea en-route from Barcelona to Corsica, when at ~ 4 am a freak wave struck the superstructure, breaking the windows of 5 Oceanview cabins on Deck 3. The incident resulted in many passengers suffering from shock and minor injuries (bruises and cuts), partial flooding of decks 2 and 3 (hallways, plus around 60 staterooms, 11 of which suffered serious interior damages – broken ceiling panels and insulation, glass, bent balcony doors, crushed veranda partitions). Passengers from the affected cabins spent the rest of the night at "Schooner Bar" and the aft lounge "Shall We Dance" (both on deck 6)."

Or maybe this one:
"On September 19, 2016, at ~ 5 am the vessel experienced heavy listing and sustained minor damages after encountering a storm in the Mediterranean Sea (Europe). Among the damages were broken windows in the "Viking Crown Lounge" (deck 11), flooded interior areas, emptied swimming pools (on Lido deck 9)."

And you wonder why I don't go on cruises.

When I wrote the original version of this commentary in December of 2008, I described her as "an increasingly frequent visitor to the Overseas Passenger Terminal".

That may have been true then, but is certainly not true as of 2023, 15 years later. I don't know when she last visited Sydney (although the last Australian incident on the page that I quoted above was in December 2013), however she certainly doesn't any more.

Her itinerary for the rest of 2023 out to 2025 shows her as travelling in either the Mediterranean or the Caribbean, with nary a crossing south of the equator.
