Puerto Quetzal and Antigua, Guatemala

The Amsterdam berthed in the container port of Puerto Quetzal (instead of the cruise ship pier which
was occupied by the MV Caribbean Princess). This complicated disembarkation.

Beth and I took a bus excursion to Antigua - the former Spanish colonial capital of all Central America.
The eruption of the Volan de Agua south of the town had forced the previous capital (Antigua Viejo) to move
a few miles away to this location in 1543. It then became one of the richest cities in the Americas before it
was destroyed and depopulated by earthquakes in 1717 and 1773.
Its abandonment moved the capital to Guatemala City in 1776.
The town is formally namedCuidad de Santiago de los Caballeros . Antigua is short for 'Antigua Guatemala'
meaning the old capital of Guatemala.
