The original FAA Air Traffic Control Tower at the 20th Street Terminal built in the late 50's. When the FAA moved to their new tower on the west side of MIA in the mid-80's the airport leased the tower cab to Pan Am to serve as their ramp tower. When Pan Am died on 12/4/91, the Aviation Department and American Airlines renovated the cab and it opened in January 1992 with airport gate controllers on the west half and AA Ramp Controllers on the east half.
