1945 - closeup of Doris Smoak Ford marching in the Coast Guard SPARS band in Washington, DC

Washington, D. C.

Thank you to Carol Ford Hill, who went to Palm Springs Junior High and Hialeah High with me from 1960 to 1965, for contributing this great image of her step-mother Doris Smoak Ford who served as a SPAR in the Coast Guard from November 1944 through May 1946. She is the clarinet player marked with the gold shield. Carol believes the parade and the size of the crowd would make it either FDR's funeral or the end of World War II.
