Miami International Airport

MIA only had one widebody international gate for years at gate 53 on the northwest end of Concourse 4. The gate was renumbered to gate E-9 in the mid 1970's when the airport revised the entire airport's concourse and lettering system. The airport's standard allotted turnaround time was one hour forty-five minutes but British scheduled something like a three hour turn so we used to charge them overtime parking after one hour forty-five minutes if another carrier was holding for the gate which was often the case. Joe Cross, BA's station manager, used to pop a cork every time we charged British for the overtime fees but it served as an incentive to get off the gate on time.

Note the Pan Am B707 taxiing in the background.
