When you call the painting specialist to paint your house or pick up the brush yourselves, you have usually flipped through several decoration magazines, you have surfed the internet for many hours and you have visited the paint shop in your neighborhood.
In all this search you have definitely seen that there are some rules in painting and only professional painters will do the project right!
Today we will see that many of these inviolable rules that are simple myths and if we want to make our space unique, we must overturn them!
1. The ceiling is always white!
The white color reflects the greatest amount of light, “draws” the gaze to it and makes the painted surface look farther away from us (i.e the room looks like a higher ceiling). We will have the same result if we choose another pale shade, escaping from the boring white ceilings!
But we can also reverse the rule, painting the ceiling in a darker shade and with a light color on the walls, when the result is equally amazing!
2. The plasters must also be white!
This is because the ceiling is white, because it is convenient for painters and because white is a “wild” color. However, if the plaster of the house is beautiful, by painting it white, we eliminate it. Intense, depending on the choice of plaster color, decoration. In addition, when the plaster is painted in a color different from the ceiling and the wall, this creates an illusion of height.
3. Dark colors make the space smaller!
It is not the dark colors that make the space smaller, it is the contrasts of the shades that create this feeling! So it does not make sense to paint a large area with a dark color to make it look smaller.
What we have to do is to choose colors with strong contrast to have this effect, while giving the space style and allowing us to then play decoratively creating corners of different styles!
4. There are specific color combinations that can be used!
All colors match each other as long as there is a reason. If the print of the sofa fabric, for example, includes two seemingly unmatched colors, they can be used to paint the walls creating a tasteful ensemble.
5. The color of the wall must be the same as the color of the furniture!
If you want a monochrome in the space, this is the safest choice. You should be aware, however, that the same color is impossible to achieve, as it is a different material, the fabric, the wood and the wall, and therefore the same color shade is given to different materials.
Modern decorative trends, however, do not suggest monochrome spaces but a combination of colors that create pleasant contrasts.
6. Pink is for girls – blue is for boys!
The painting of the children’s room can be done with an endless range of colors that are bright, cheerful and enhance the creativity and imagination of children!
It is also the most suitable place in the house to host a large mural with children’s performances, a scene from a favorite fairy tale, a natural landscape, etc.
7. There are “taboo” colors in painting!
Black, dark brown and bright red are considered prohibitive for painting walls. But if they are combined properly, they can be part of a multi-color or a relatively small wall can be painted with them, the result can only be unique and impressive. A classic example is the combination of red, black and white for decorating bathrooms or kitchens.
8. Only 3 colors can be used in the space!
The three colors are a rule that applies simply because that is the average!
If the space is very small the three colors are many. On the contrary, if we have a large space or a “multi-space” (e.g, living room with kitchen together, a loft or studio) this rule can be abolished since we want a different color for each function of the space.
We want relaxation in the living room, positive feelings and an appetite in the dining room, creativity in the kitchen and the office!
To do this we will need to choose colors that favor these emotions and it is not possible to limit ourselves to just three colors.
