Breach Inlet (left of this image) separates Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island in South Carolina.
Very close to this spot (Marshall Battery) in February 1864, the Confederate submarine, H L Hunley, launched
to engage and sink the USS Housatonic. The Hunley signalled its success back to the Battery, but then sank,
about 3 miles offshore, with the loss of all lives. The Hunley, and its crew, was not recovered until 2000.
A little technical note here! I am dedicated to horizontal horizons :-)
Although land formations usually have a slope this way or that, the sea does not.
For our view at or near sea level, it is (apparently) horizontal. In this image, several
issues are at play. The beach slopes to the water. The rock groyne tapers into the
water. And then, the visible sea at the right horizon is actually close to shore with
small breaking waves, whereas the sea at left horizon is somewhat wave free and at 'infinity'.
Hence, a visual trick - which can lead to an apparent sloping horizon for the sea.
