Base Camp Suite

Nui Dat, Phuoc Tuy Province, Sth. Vietnam

On the rare times that we Infantrymen were in base camp - perhaps 5 days in each
30 - it was luxury to have a permanent tent, with bed, table, mat, chair, and for a
limited time in the evening, a bare bulb electric light. Of course, the latrines, showers
and dining facility were not 'ensuite' . Most of the flooring, furniture and other comforts
were scrounged from packing crates, or bought at the local village market. Nevertheless,
it was always such a cheerful homecoming, if only for a few days. Everything is relative.

Thanks for putting these up Colin. It is important that we recognize that these photos represent your experience but also a piece of all of our history. When we look at past wars the most poignant photos are invariably from the collections of the participants.

Very touching image and text.
And a world without war,
i guess we can dream on since
too many humans are sleepwalkers...

It was a tough time, lots of sacrifices.
