Kalimar A

This simple, well built, Kalimar A 35mm camera was first manufactured in 1955
by Taisei Koki in Japan and was 'branded" for the importing company, Kalimar,
in the US. It is a non-rangefinder camera, with helical focusing and a f3.5 45mm
lens with speeds to 1/200. The shutter is cocked independently of the film advance,
on the barrel of the lens. Kalimar, perhaps much the same as Hanimex in Australia,
imported a range of rebadged cameras into America from Japan, Russia, and China.
Kalimar US was taken over by Tiffen around 1970.

Although quite compact at 5"x3"x2.75" (13cmx8cmx7cm), this is a solid camera.
It is a working model with smooth controls and a silky shutter. It was discovered
as part of an estate disposal, and cost a few dollars only. A nice addition.

Sorry, Johnny, for the confusion. No, by helical I simply mean the front portion rotates through about 18-20 degrees (manually), setting focus by estimation of the user. No AF, no rangefinder, and not 'zone' markings. :-) I am perhaps using an incorrect or misleading term. At least I know what I mean ... :-) Cheers, Colin

Helical focusing?? Does that mean the front element is not rotating?

It looks quite small Colin, and quite familiar for that era. Wonderful that it works so well after all these years.
