Old Homestead

Nr. Gunnedah, NSW, Australia

Modern farming methods, and the reality of mass production in agriculture, caused the
collapse of the small farm in rural Australia during the mid 1960s and 1970s. "Get big, or get out"
was the mantra. Many small farms clung to the old ways of living off the land, and selling
local produce to survive. Now, all that is left, are falling-down homes on 25acre/10hectare
pieces of farmland. A few survived by totally reinventing themselves - new crops like olives, pecans,
or grapes. Most, however, would not or could not change. They are now a ghostly reminder
of the irresistible forces of progress in this ever changing world.
