I came across the lady to the right higher up the hill. On her way down to work towards the market square, she greeted and chatted with people and the other lady joinded her further down. The Naxi people, at least the older generations, are a matriach society. They consider strong women as beautiful women. The men have to work hard only during the first years (up to 3 years, my understanding) of the marriage. After the "trial period" is over, the wife takes over as a bread winner and the husband can take it easy. They can play cards, raise birds (a popular hobby) or simply kick back and enjoy life. I am pretty sure the tradition is no long practised at least not as strict as it was in the years past, but I did not come across busy men in the morning ....
