Imam Bonjol Monument

Manado, Indonesia

This is the monument in honor of Imam Bonjol, a Muslim priest from Bonjol in West Sumatera. His real name was Peto Syarif and he was a national hero who fought against the Dutch colonialism in the 18th century. Despite valiant fighting by the Indonesians in that region, the overwhelming power of the Dutch military eventually prevailed. Syarif was captured in 1837 after continued the fighting from his tiny fortress in Bonjol. The Dutch exiled him to Manado in Sulawesi where he died in 1864, at the age of 92. And yes, his tomb is nearby.
