Another type of "martabak" but this pancake has a completely different origin and of course, a completely different taste. This one is definitely sweet.

When I was little, this pancake was made by Chinese Indonesians that came from an island, Bangka Island, near Sumatera. It may have originated from there and it has more Chinese roots. It is like a deep dish pancake consisting of dough, generous amount of real butter, generous layers of cheese, peanuts, chocolate, sweetened condensed milk, etc. After the ingredients have been added, the round martabak is cut in half and the two inside halves are put together, leaving the dough part on the outside. Then it is cut into smaller pieces. It is so greasy that your hand will be soaked with melting butter by just holding that in your hand. If you bite on it, you can see the butter ooze out to the surface. The taste is incredibly good but very, very rich. Just by looking at it, you can imagine how much fat/grease will clog your heart arteries. One small piece is the maximum you should eat or better yet, stay away, if you can resist!
