Native Hawaiian hibiscus Koki'o 'ula
By 1885 most of Hawaii's 33 species of native hibiscus
were almost extinct due to blight, feral pigs, and grazing cattle.
Concentrated efforts by private citizens, State and Federal
organizations worked to preserved the natural habitat and, more recently,
made plants available for private gardens.
