Coconut Island and Kaneohe Bay

Moku o Loe Island, also known as Coconut Island, is rich in Hawaiian history. Located on the windward side of the island of O'ahu it was originally owned by King Kamehameha III and was a popular place for royal gatherings in the 1800s. The island was sold in the early 1930s and for a time it was a private retreat, and then housed a packing plant for Coral Tuna and Figaro cat food. The first shots fired during the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor may have been fired at a grounds keeper who saw the Japanese planes flying over and ran for cover in the lighthouse. The pilots, thinking someone was going to sound the alarm, peppered the island with machine gun fire before flying across the island to bomb Pearl Harbor. The TV show Gilligan's Island used pictures of the island in the series though none of the actual shows were filmed on the island. The island and surrounding reef is now the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, a research facility for graduate and undergraduate students from around the world. An aerial view and more information about the island marine research facility can be found at: http://www.hawaii.edu/HIMB/
