On Memorial Day, at Ala Moana Park, on the island of O'ahu, a lantern floating ceremony was held in honor of those who have died. Each lantern held a candle and pieces of paper with the names of beloved ones. As the sun set, the lanterns were placed in the water. Based on the toro nagashi ceremony of Japanese culture, the Hawaii event symbolized the universal need to honor the memory of ancestors and loved ones.
