Juvenile Cooper's Hawk

Coyote Bend

This is one beautiful bird. For the longest time, knowing
little about birds, I thought our yard was graced by the
only Gyrfalcon outside the arctic. Turns out our earlier
visitors, preying on birds at our feeders, were these long
slim short winged hawks. (Also turns out Steve Chindgren has
Gyrfalcon/Peregrine crosses, but I digress..)

This is a juvenile Cooper's Hawk: its breast is striped,
it's tail tip is rounded, and it doesn't hunt well w others
(yet). It might as well have brought its accordion when it
went after the Quail families..
