Thanks again Meike! - i did a google with your info - and i'm about 99% sure that its a Cackling goose - now thats name i can identify with, unlike most all the others, that seem so arbitrary.

I fear I may have misled you here. It's a type of Canada Goose. Not sure whether Dusky or Cackling. Who comes up with those names I wonder...
