Wa'aba Crater - Natural Wonder in Saudi Arabia

The Wahba Crater, largest of its kind in Middle east, is a spectacular and impressive site. The crater is approx. 2.5 km wide, and the cliffs drop steeply 270 meters to a flat base, in the centre of which is a huge salt pan. There has been much speculation as to the origin of crater. It is not known whether the crater was formed by a meteorite impact or by volcanic activity, in the form of an underground explosion.

Wahba crater is located between Makkah-Riyadh highway, approx. 250 km from Taif, travelling towards Riyadh. Leaving highway after Radwan (small town).

This is one place you cannot go on your own. You need to find a group of people to go with you because you need to plan for the survival of the group with enough gallons of water, some petrol and foods. Help each other with good GPS are the only survival. The sight is over whelming with some locals camping at the different ends of the crater. There were plenty of semi-precious stones too - peridots! Melvin & I was among a convey of 6 four-wheel drivers. A great adventure.

We visited this place 23rd November 2000. It was just a fantastic place to marvel at. We camped there overnight and it rained very hard all night and the wind nearly blew or tent away. It was so peaceful when the rained finally stopped and all you could hear in the early dawn was the distant roar of a passemger airplane passing high overhead. Fabulous memories, but in November with the rain it was very cold brrrrrrr, such a contrast to rest of the year I guess. It rained so hard that our jeep tracks were washed away and we had to back track using the GPS. If you work in Saudi Arabia, take the trip, well worth every second.

The place is amazing, was there three weeks ago, going soon as well, there are 2 ways to Wahba Crater, one through Makka and the other through Usfan (might be confusing for someone) still you can ejoy the trip both ways

On 11th February 20011, we walked completely around the top of the crater. Gand father, daughter and 2 grand children aged 12 and 15. Just wonderful. 22°53'40.25"N / 41°08'09.90"E Approximate coordinates for Al Waaba Crater. I've also been to crater and thought it was fantastic. Looks like Kingdom tried to make it tourist attraction by building covered tables, and they have been vandalized with graffiti, but the crater is all natural. Only graffiti is people writing their names in the salt at the bottom of the crater. These photos are wonderful and really do depict the natural beauty of the crater.

Visited this site 25 years ago. It is sad to think it is being a tourist attraction!! Check out David Grainger at USGS, his research has proved that this crater was caused by volcanic activity when steam erupted through the mantle.
