A very common wild shrub in the mountains of Serra de Monchique. The bell-shaped flowers appear in late autumn just as last year's fruit are ripening from yellow to scarlet red; they have a superficial resemblance and taste to a Strawberry. This much prizes fruit is harvested, fermented and distilled into the local form of grappa called "Medronho", often illegally in well hidden stills in mountain huts. It is delicious, but very potent.
